Abstract:

This article touches upon the linguistic description of general technical and general scientific knowledge within the framework of the linguistic training programs. One type of such description is the terminological database, as the term expresses a scientific/technical concept, which in turn reflects the scientific/technical knowledge. The author of the article considers the terminological database as one of the tools to assimilate technical/scientific knowledge, which is necessary for language students in the process of teaching scientific and technical translation. Thus, the aim of the research is to identify the structural and functional parameters of the most massive modern terminological databases, which can form the basis for the development of an educational terminological database in the field of oil and gas equipment for the language students studying technical translation. The study material is seven resources available in free access: TaaS, Termite 6L, UNTERM, IATE, TERMIUM Plus, WIPO Pearl, LexSite. In the article, such concepts as database, linguistic database, and terminological database are considered consistently and the difference between the terminological database and the translation memory is explained. The author analyzes and describes the structure of terminological databases, specifying the universal structural components: information component, linguistic component, technical component and organizational component. An analogy is made between the typological functions of dictionaries and the terminology databases being analyzed. There are four main functions: systematizing function, reference function, educational function and normative function. In the course of the study, lexicographic means for expressing each of these functions are distinguished. At the end of the article the author draws conclusions: a definition of the terminological database is given, the compulsory lexicographic means of the universal functions of the terminological database are listed, the compulsory structural and functional parameters for the projected terminology database are identified.
