This article deals with historical and architectural characteristics of the women’s gymnasium in Sloboda Vyatka province in the second half of XIX — early XX centuries. The research is based on the documents of the State archive of the Kirov region (Kirov). In the collections of the Vyatka provincial Board (F. 583, construction division), Slobodskoy girl’s gymnasium (F. 878), Vyatka gubernia Zemstvo (F. 616), the author of the article discovered documents that reveal the authentic look of the school, its development and peculiarities of historical development, as well as the design and construction stages of the new building. A valuable component of the research is the confirmation of the authorship of buildings. It was I. A. Charushin who had worked out the design project. The author also characterizes the role of the merchant class in the development of the education system in the city. Moreover, the construction details of school buildings are presented and the stages of the educational system formation are identified. The author explores the influence of school buildings on the shaping of the look of the architectural appearance of Slobodskoy city, analyzes the location and the associated problems of urban space composition.
