Pottery industry on the territory of the Kurgan District (county) of the Tobolsk province according to pre-revolutionary statistics

Abstract:

This article aims to analyze the information from pre-revolutionary sources on the quantity of potters working in the Kurgan District (county since 1898) of the Tobolsk Province. The information obtained can aid in identifying the local pottery production centers and the craft development dynamics; additionally, this information can advance archaeological and ethnographic research. The comparative analysis of the available information shows that the most complete representation of the pottery spread in the Kurgan District can be obtained from the 1894–1901 sources. They include N. L. Skalozubov’s Experience in Reviewing Peasant Crafts in the Tobolsk Province and The Review of Peasant Crafts in the Tobolsk Province; I. Ya. Trofimov and M. P. Gusakovsky’s A Review of the Economic and Agricultural Situation in the Kurgan District and the City of Kurgan in the Tobolsk Province; as well as the census sheets of the First general census of the population of the Russian Empire in 1897. The 1910-1914 office documents contain information on the potters’ quantity only in six settlements. In five of them, the numbers are close to those of the late 19^th-early 20^th c. and show only a slight increase.
