Abstract:

This article analyzes the publications in the Spanish newspaper El Siglo Futuro on the February 1917 Revolution in Russia. This newspaper was the official media of the Integrist Party and one of the most relevant newspapers in Spain at that time. The author provides a brief overview of the recent research on Russia’s image in the Spanish-language media, as well as of the studies on the history and language features of the press of the Carlist movement in Spain. Based on the studied materials, the author distinguishes different communicative strategies used when presenting information about what was happening in Russia. The methods used include contextual and definitive analysis, as well as critical discourse analysis. The results show that El Siglo Futuro took a pro-German position and used a number of communication tactics aimed at discrediting the Russian authorities. Based on the lexical-semantic and syntactic features of the analyzed texts, the author concludes that El Siglo Futuro welcomed the fall of the Russian monarchy as beneficial for the Central Powers (German Empire, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria), although being wary of the revolution itself.
