Abstract:

The paper studies the settlement system of the Russian population in the middle and lower reaches of Tobol and its tributaries, which was formed in the first century after the Russian conquest of Siberia. The issue of settlement was described in several works, but the landscape paradigms were mentioned only indirectly. The article aims to study the settlement structure of the pioneers and the autochthonous population in a spatial aspect. The features of the landscape and relief confinement of settlements were studied using the cartographic materials by S. U. Remezov. The authors evaluated not only “cartoids’ from the point of view of source study and geography, but also the mapping of the events and facts reflected in Remezov’s maps. Moreover, having used GIS (geographic information system), a mathematically distinguished “urban area” was indicated, in addition to the main characteristics and settlement patterns of Russian villages and autochthonous population's yurts. The source itself is characterized through analysis of working with specific geographic information.
