Abstract:

The author shares her practice of translating the memoirs of Pierre Marillaud “My Experience of the War. Childhood in Occupied La-Rochelle”. The main properties of the text of memoirs are singled out: (1) the category of the author is realized according to the triadic Bakhtian model “biographical author, primary author, secondary author”, (2) the technique of “showing in telling” prevails when presenting (3) the synthesis of the main modalities of perception thus achieving the ultimate reliability of the story, which is obtained (4) through the abundance of reali of all types. Such properties of the text as polyphony and point of view are regarded as structural semantic constants.

Defining the nature of the translation process from the methodological angle, the author turns to the theory of «deconstructivism», which was developed by Jacques Derrida. The possibility to attract his perception of any text as a «complex historical and cultural process», as well as his postulate about the deferred meaning of a linguistic sign in the text is supported by the analyses of several fragments in the original and translation.
