The subject of this article is the novel “Return to Egypt” (2013) by a distinguished contemporary writer V. A. Sharov. This novel has received a number of literary prizes, yet, it has not been sufficiently studied. This fact makes the novel topical for us. It is noteworthy that the novel is connected with N. V. Gogol’s works, which allows identifying the problem of the originality of the literary reception of the classic.
This article describes the type of the reception of classic literature based on the works of the well-known researchers, such as G. M. Vasilyeva and E. V. Abramovskikh.
The present paper foregrounds that along with the known types of literary reception (e. g., criticism, parody, selective interpretation), in the novel “Return to Egypt” by V. A. Sharov, there is also a completely new type of reception — completing a classic work. It reflects the connection of writers with the historical discourse about the fate of Russia in the world and appears as an evaluation form of national history.
