Abstract:

This article studies Russian borrowings in the language of Siberian Tatars. The bilingualism of the Siberian Tatars and long-term language contacts with Russians contributed to the penetration of a large number of Russian loanwords. This study aims at describing the thematic groups of Russian borrowings, found in bilingual dictionaries of Siberian Tatars: the dictionaries by I. Giganov (1801, 1804), the dictionary by D. G. Tumasheva (1992), the dictionary by M. A. Sagidullin (2010), the dictionaries by G. T. Bakiyeva (2017, 2018).

About 1,000 Russian borrowings were identified in the language of Siberian Tatars. 25 thematic groups have been singled out: “Socio-economic phenomena”, “Socio-economic processes”, “Professions”, “Documents”, “Data illustration”, “Numbers”, “Geometric figures”, “Locatives”, “Scientific terms”, “Military terms”, “Onomastic terms”, “Temporal vocabulary”, “Religious terms”, “Medicines”, “Subjects”, “Food”, “Clothes and shoes”, “Electricity”, “Housing”, “Materials”, “Agriculture”, “Transport”, “Flora”, “Fauna”, and “Art”.

Most of the Russian borrowings in the language of Siberian Tatars are identified in the names of socio-economic phenomena, subjects, and professions.
