The article reveals some aspects of improving professional competences of foreign lan-guages teachers of secondary schools and searching the basis for working out the program of retraining. The urgency of the research is conditioned by the fact that introduction of a second foreign language (German) in schools caused lack of specialists possessing professional competences of teaching a second foreign language (German) on a high level. Besides, there are some difficulties in improving skills of teachers from Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug because of the vast geographic distance. The purpose is to compare decisions of the problem in Russia and abroad, to prove usefulness of putting into practice the program of improving professional competences of the German language teachers of secondary schools during a short period of time. Further on the teachers would become trainer-teachers in the system of vocational education and training. The analysis of theoretical and methodical data made it possible to consider the notion “professional competence” and to work out the retraining program for teachers. The main approaches to the problem in question are the analysis of questionnaires, test results, and the method of statistical manipulation. This article can make use for students of pedagogical departments and teachers.
