This man’s biography is connected with the names of numerous famous people in Russia. N. G. Porfiridov recollected his memories about Novgorod in the period of 1920-1930s upon the recommendation of the academician D. S. Likhachev. The foreword to this book was written by the Doctor of Arts and Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, Yu. G. Bobrov. His capsule biography was included in the Encyclopedia of Russian Museums. However, none of the sources about the life of Porfiridov describes his activity during the Great Patriotic War, when he was working as a tutor of the Russian Language and Literature department of Tyumen Teaching Institute from 1941 to 1945. This research is aimed to fill in this gap in our knowledge. The article highlights the main milestones in Porfiridov’s life, his relations with the famous Russian historian and his teacher — S. F. Platonov, and his role in preserving the cultural heritage of Novgorod in the pre-war period. It also reveals his scientific work and participation in the evacuation of the Novgorod cultural masterpieces during the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. Much attention is given to Porfiridov’s work in Tyumen Teaching Institute, his part in the teaching process, the analysis of his academic load, and his scientific and social activity.
