The present paper investigates the emotional dominants «strast’» / «passion» in the first parts of the trilogy «The Road to Calvary» by Aleksei Tolstoy and «Women in Love» by David H. Lawrence. The contrastive analysis is based on integrated methodological approaches in linguistics of emotions, culture studies and cognitology. The study of conceptual spheres «strast’» / «passion» helped to defi ne the key meanings and their textual realization in Russian and English texts.Among core meanings we have singled out the following: «a strong feeling», «physical attraction/lust», and «unconscious, temporal, dynamic feeling». We used the following dictionaries: The Great Dictionary of the Russian language. Ed. Kuznetsov, S.A. — St. Petersburg., 2000, Dictionary by Dahl (1863-1866), Dictionary of the Russian language by Ozhegov, S.I., Shvedova, N.Y., Мerriam-Webster Dictionary, Collins English Dictionary, Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English. The analysis showed that the conceptual sphere of the English concept «passion» does not include the meaning «fear», but has the meaning «anger/dangerous behaviour».The multistage analysis of the authors’ texts’ arrangement on phonetic, lexical and syntactical levels with the help of different fi gures of speech supported deeper interpretation of emotional dominants as important constitutive text elements.References:
