“Multitran” dictionary as a folded functional model of term semantics, syntagmatics and pragmatics

Abstract:

In this article the electronic Multitran dictionary is considered, as a lexicographic model of an open type translation terminological dictionary. The relevance of carrying out such research is caused the Translation Terminography Theory being still developed. The means of term semantization in the dictionary are analyzed at three levels of the content plane of the term sign: semantics, syntagmatics and pragmatics. The term semantics that is the volume and the content of the special concept designated by the word or the phrase is revealed by three means of semantization: an extended definition in two languages, a short generic definition in the form of a one word translation equivalent or a term phrase and reference system. At the syntagmatic level the translation equivalent search is scanned through term phrases as fixed collocations. Term phrases in the dictionary carry out three main functions: entrance unit, definition, translation equivalent. The pragmatic parameter is realized by the system of hyperlinks to the sources presented by both certain authors and dictionaries.
