Youth demographic culture in the life planning system

Abstract:

This article is based on the results of the annual sociological monitoring “Social Strategies of Youth”. The study was conducted using an online survey of young people in the Belgorod Region (N = 5 847). The sample was quota-based on gender, age, and settlement type. In analyzing the place and role of youth demographic culture in life planning, we consider the following indicators: matrimonial strategies, self-preservation strategies, migration strategies, career strategies, and educational strategies. The first three types of strategies form the structural elements of demographic culture, while the latter mediate its formation. The article concludes that, despite positive indicators of the development of demographic culture among young people in Belgorod Region, there are also issues. The matrimonial component of demographic culture is characterized by a desire to marry and start a family, but is not oriented toward large families. The self-preservation component of demographic culture reflects young people’s desire to take care of their health (exercise, eat healthy, undergo medical checkups) and live a long life. The migration component of demographic culture is the most controversial, as it intersects two strategies: the sedentary type and the interregional type. In our view, studying the demographic culture of young people is particularly important in the context of social, youth, and family policy, with the aim of organizing a system for its development and support.
