The research objective is to identify the problem solving capabilities of the commercialization process in higher education institutions on the basis of the project approach. The problems of the commercialization process are classified on the basis of the process approach applied to each of the steps: assessment and selection of ideas, the formation of the necessary funds, securing the rights to innovations, and their further production or implementation. The application of project-based approach for stimulation of the commercialization of innovations in higher education is justified, taking into account the existing global trends: the growth of the motivation of participants of innovation activities, growing importance of intellectual assets, and shift of the emphasis from the income to the principle of self-sufficiency in the universities. An example of successful use of the project approach in cooperation of Russian universities is the project “Operation: Commercialization” as presented in the article. Based on the analysis of the results of the project, the positive aspects of the impact of the project approach to the development of the commercialization process are identified as following: social, educational, economic, and technological aspect of development.
