Import substitution in Ural’s food industry

Abstract:

The paper deals with availability of food products through domestic production and intensification of import substitution in the food industry. The situation and dynamics of food import volume and structure are presented. The paper demonstrates the changes in import after Russia’s entering the WTO and the escalation of international conflicts. The paper analyses the possibilities of import substitution in food industry under WTO conditions and aggravation of international situation. In the paper the analysis is carried out for the Ural Federal District, because this district can serve as a model of Russia that includes features of a number of representative parts of the country, namely extractive, industrial, and agrarian regions. The dynamics of food industry in the Ural Federal District are shown. The analysis is based on data of the Federal State Statistics Service, Federal Customs Service and the Ural Customs Administration.
