About the author:

Toshhenko, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Research Supervisor of the Division for Sociology, Russian State University for the Humanities, Chief Research Worker of the Institute of Sociology, Russian Academy of Sciences, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal «Sociological Studies»

The article studies the conditions of the emergence of a new social class, that of precariat. The reasons for its emergence are explained. The main features of this class are revealed and juxtaposed to the features of other social groups. The place and role of the new class in the modern specialization of labour are outlined. The author considers the position of precariat on the labour market and its emerging self-actualization as «a class for itself». The consequences of the existence and functioning of precariat are singled out.
