Abstract:

This article deals with key characteristics and the role of medium-sized enterprises in the Russian economy. The paper covers various interpretations of their qualitative and quantitative characteristics. The indicators of their operation and development are analyzed for the 2008-2013 period: the sectoral structure, the share of medium-sized enterprises in the total number of business structures, the share of their output in the GDP of Russia and so on. Further, they are compared with the same indicators in the EU. The next section describes the support measures available for medium-sized enterprises. In addition, the indicators of budgetary expenditures per company and per employee of small and medium-sized enterprises segment are calculated. The necessity of elaborating special support measures for medium-sized businesses is substantiated in the conclusion of the article.
