The Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug-Ugra is used as a test region to employ a variety of economic and geographical tools to diversify the economy of a raw material production region. The article describes ways of geographical modelling aimed at balanced social and economic development of a territory. It also defines the basic concepts underlying the model, which are necessary to select criteria metric; it describes current economic and geographical status of the territory; social and economic issues that hamper balanced development of the Autonomous Okrug; areas of geographic modelling; socio-economic effect to follow the introduction of geographical modelling. The research results can be used in scientific and practical activities to carry out socioeconomic reforms at both regional and local scale, aimed to reduce of dependence on raw materials component of the economy: the regional economy, the territorial organization of population, electronic cartography, the automated control systems. The main conclusions are aimed at a comprehensive study of the territory potential, the account of natural resource and human potential as a base of strategic planning and forecasting in the system of information support of administrative decisions.References:
